South Park is a cancelled open world video game based on the television series of the same name. It was developed by Ubisoft and Buzz Monkey Software in 2005. The game would've been released for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and Nintendo GameCube before being scrapped due to many development problems.

Plot[]

The only known plot for the game is the first mission in it, where the special Olympics are being held in South Park. There is a finished cutscene that should play at the start of the mission where the mayor of South Park announces the special Olympics. It isn't confirmed, since there is no audio, but it's the most logical guess since the mission after revolves around the special Olympics. After the cutscene, Cartman then needs to do four tasks to be able to register for it. He first has to collect an outfit consisting of one shoe, a helmet, and a pair of pants. He then has to wear his disguise on a short bus going to the mental hospital, and then find a straitjacket. When he finds the straitjacket, a cutscene should be triggered. The cutscene has Cartman in a room with two doctors at the mental hospital who think that Cartman is an actual patient. He is then forced to go through shock therapy where his V-chip (reference to South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut) is activated due to the electricity, and the machine being used goes haywire. Then Cartman is trapped in the room with one of the doctors, and the doctor has the key to escape.

There is a test mission in Build 656, the earliest build available, of a blank room where you can fight dogs, and also spawn in mental hospital staff. You can fight them in this level, which makes it clear that after the cutscene the player will fight staff to get out of the hospital, and retrieve the key.

Development[]

The idea for the game was pitched by two unknown Ubisoft producers, and was developed by Buzz Monkey Studios. The game would have been developed by Ubisoft, but there was no team to help develop it, so they opted for a third-party developer. The game is said to be the sequel to the first South Park game which was released in 1998. It could be a sequel to South Park Rally from 2000, but the games have no logical ties, so it is assumed it was a predecessor to the 1998 game. The game, while looking like The Simpsons: Hit and Run, was more aimed to be a traditional adventure game with problem solving. The game was cancelled due to harsh circumstances pushed onto the Buzz Monkey staff by the producers, who had never had the producer role in a game before. Their unprofessional, aggressive, and downright weird behavior caused Ubisoft to shut the project down, and the producers were later fired. There are many other contributing factors to it though. The producers would push unreasonable deadlines, and this coupled with the enormous amount of work that still had to be finished, led to the games downfall. This game was also many of the developers first projects, meaning there were many people with little experience on game making working on a game with an extremely tight schedule. A collector discovered the game in an Xbox Development Kit around 2015. Only some footage of the prototype is on YouTube and no known ISO's of the game are available anywhere. The game would’ve had gameplay similar to that of GTA and The Simpsons: Hit & Run where the player could roam freely around the town, drive vehicles, fight pedestrians, and complete missions. The U.I is also similar, and there are some sounds in the game ripped straight from The Simpsons game. The four boys were all playable characters and secondary characters from then all eight seasons of the show would also be featured.

The game would've also had a split screen multiplayer component that featured racing and combat among other things.

Why It Was Cancelled[]

  • The game was cancelled due to the extreme stress put on the team by the producers.
