Why It Was Cancelled[]
- Although the first 2 games/episodes have a fair amount of good and decent reviews by critics, they were panned by fans.
- Two first episodes did not sell well as SEGA hoped, especially the second one.
- Sega Studios Australia was closed in Spring 2013.
Results[]
- Sonic the Hedgehog 4 only has two episodes, with no third episode at all.
- The Sonic franchise continued to exist, beginning Sonic: Lost World, which was released in late 2013.
- SEGA released Sonic Mania in 2017 to positive reviews. While not developed by a Japanese studio, it was the more successful follow up on consoles to the 2D formula, resulting in it more popularly being synonymous as the entry that comes after Sonic 3 than the actual Sonic 4.
- Later in 2023, SEGA would internally develop and release Sonic Superstars to capitalize on Sonic Mania's success, further alienating Sonic 4 from the popularized chronology of "classic" 2D entries into the series, now being unnumbered.
