On October 18, 2014 (the twentieth anniversary of the original release of Sonic & Knuckles and subsequently Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles), Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley (who developed the remastered versions of Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2) released a concept video showcasing a prototype of a remastered version of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles for smartphone devices they have worked on for a while. However, circumstances prevented the development from proceeding any further.
It was said by Stealth himself in a livestream that he and Taxman had the idea of mobile port having four game modes.
*First game mode: Sonic the Hedgehog 3
*Second game mode: Sonic 3 Complete
*Third game mode: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
*Fourth game mode: Sonic & Knuckles
In the same livestream, he said that the mobile port would have the 1 Player format for Competion Mode and a new Blue Spheres level, both would eventually be added in Sonic Origins.
Plot[]
The same as the 1994 game.
Why it Was Cancelled[]
- There were music copyrights in the zones' music that were composed by Michael Jackson and Brad Buxer (Probably not, because the prototype only had playable Angel Island, the 3 bonus stages and the 14 special stages, plus, like other S3&K rereleases, it would have the prototype songs).
- Christian Whitehead couldn't hold the Sonic 3 Mobile's rights.
Results[]
- The mobile port of Sonic 3 ended up being cancelled.
- The mobile ports of Sonic CD, Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 are stand alone.
- Sonic Mania released in August of 2017.
- It would finally see the light of day in Sonic Origins in 2022.
